Lets Talk about Sex!

Could I get pregnant after having unprotected sex during my periods?

Dear Sex-During-Period,

Even if the chance may be small, it is possible for you to get pregnant if you have unprotected sex during your periods. Research has shown that it is possible for women to ovulate at any time during the period cycle. A period cycle is normally supposed to last for 28 days, but the length of cycle for each woman can vary. In addition to this, even women with regular periods do not necessarily ovulate at the same time in each cycle so you can never be sure of whether your ovulation and periods are happening together.

Women have two ovaries that are supposed to take turns producing eggs, but sometimes, both ovaries produce eggs very close to each other. This means that even if you've already ovulated once during your period cycle, there's a possibility for it to happen again.

There is also a possibility for you to mistake the little bit of blood that can sometimes get released with the egg as menstruation and there's a high chance that unprotected sex during this time can lead to pregnancy.

It's best to be cautious if your intention is to not get pregnant. So if you want to have sex during your periods, make sure that you're using some form of contraception.
