Lets Talk about Sex!

I don't know how rational or irrational it is, but I am really scared of the whole sex thing—procreation and all that stuff! I mean the whole process really scares me. I know the ideal answer is “It is okay to be scared, you will get over it,” but what I want to know is how to be okay. And how to work this fear out?

Dear Scared,

You are not alone. Many women are scared about procreation and sex, although many of us may not talk about it. Let’s go deeper and figure out why you are scared. Do you see sex as standing apart from other things in your life, like a partner who you are in love with or someone you lust after. Maybe when you think about sex in an abstract manner, it is fearful. But when you have something good to tie it to like a boyfriend or girlfriend, the whole sex thing as you call it and procreation take on a whole new meaning. It becomes something beautiful and to be cherished. I am curious about which part of the whole process really scares you? Are you talking about the actual sexual deed or are you referring to settling down and having babies? If it is the deed, it’s natural the first time around and that’s okay. If you are referring to the settling down and having babies, I know that every woman has a fear of this before they actually do it. It is scary no doubt—especially when you think about the whole pregnancy and birth process, but most women go through it and overcome it and most say that it was worth it when they hold their newborn baby. Bottom line, the way to work this fear out is to go through it like anything else in life.
